ANSWERS TO SAQs
SAQ 2:
1. The component of your velocity directly north is 3 m/s. The
component directly west is 5 m/s. What is your resultant velocity?
2. Calculate the resultant distance from the information given below.
You decided to go to meet a friend for a coffee and stop off at the
cash dispenser along the way. What is the resulting distance of
your journey as shown in the diagram below?
3. You leave home and drive 100 kilometres south, then 50
kilometres west. What is the final displacement from home? Use
Pythagoras’ Theorem to work out the resultant force.
4. A force of 8N and then 7N was applied to an object as shown in the
diagram below. The angles of displacement are shown.
7N
450 800
8N
i) Use the Sine Rule to calculate the magnitude of the resultant
force.
ii) Use the Cosine Rule to check your answer.
Note: It can be useful to draw a diagram to help determine the resultants.
Please show all your workings out, and answers to 1 decimal place.
