Menstrual phase
the phase of the menstrual cycle in which there is LOW estrogen levels
Proliferative phase
the phase of the menstrual cycle in which estrogen PEAKS
Secretory phase
the phase of the menstrual cycle in which progesterone peaks and prepares for
implantations
LH surge
triggers ovulation
Pre-embryonic period
first 2 weeks after conception where the zygote forms
Embryonic period
2nd week-8th week of pregnancy where essentials of the fetus is formed and the
fetus is most vulnerable to teratogenic substances

chorionic villi which grow into fetal portion of the placenta
Amnion
thin membrane containing amniotic fluid
Amniotic fluid
fluid which protects the fetus which cushions, maintains temperature regulation,
and creates an infection barrier made up of 98% water
Yolk sac
functions only in early embryonic development where it forms primitive RBCs during
the 1st 6 weeks before liver takes over
Umbilical cord
formed from the amnion, contains 1 vein and two arteries, made up of Wharton's
jelly
Placenta
Interface between the mother and the fetus, arising from trophoblasts, that has
metabolic, respiratory, endocrine, immunologic and protective functions
Fetal period
9th week-birth where development and growth occur
