ANCOVA IS A BLEND OF ANOVA AND REGRESSION
• Allows you to first, control for variables that change the relationshi
with the dependent variable
• The underlying philosophy or hope for ANCOVA, like other multiva
complicated, so more complicated models will be more accurate.
DEFINITIONS / ABBREVIATIONS
DV/DEPENDENT VARIABLE: needs to be continuous
• Should be the measurement you took in the stduy or what info you
groups
IV/INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
• Has to be a CATEGORICAL VARIABLE
• You can put people into groups based on any category (gender, han
manipulations (instructions vs no instructions)
Ex: a 3x2 ancova = IV 1 has 3 levels, and IV 2 has 2 levels
C/V -COVARIATE
• This variable changes WITH the DV and is used to ADJUST the DV to
• CVs can either be continuous variable (such as age) or a categorical
• CVs are used to ADJUST THE VALUES of the DVs, usually to create L
your Ivs.
