Question 1

1.1 Forms of Energy (14 Marks)

• Kinetic Energy: Energy that an object possesses due to its motion. For instance,
a moving car has kinetic energy.

• Potential Energy: Stored energy that an object has because of its position. An
example is a ball held at a height, which has gravitational potential energy.

• Thermal Energy: The internal energy in substances—the vibration and
movement of atoms and molecules. A hot cup of coffee holds thermal energy.

• Chemical Energy: Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. It is
released in a chemical reaction, often producing heat. For example, the energy in
food is chemical energy.

• Electrical Energy: Energy caused by the movement of electrons. A common
example is electricity flowing through a wire.

• Light Energy: A type of kinetic energy with the ability to make types of light visible
to human eyes. An example would be sunlight.

• Sound Energy: A form of energy that is associated with vibrations of matter. A
guitar string producing sound waves is a good example.

1.2 Energy Transformation (4 Marks)

Energy can be transformed from one form to another. For example, in a car engine,
chemical energy from the fuel is converted into thermal energy, which is then converted
into kinetic energy to move the car. Another example is a light bulb, where electrical
energy is converted into light and heat energy.
