Learning Goal

A student learning goal I have for my 1st grade learners is Learners will use observations

of the sun, moon and stars to describe and predict patterns. This learning goal is centered around

Idaho Content Standard 1.ESS.1.1 Use observations of the Sun, Moon, and stars to describe

patterns that can be predicted (Idaho State Department of Education (SDE), n.d.-a). I am able to

provide opportunities to meet the sun observations part of this standard at school, but it is

difficult to observe moon and star patterns during the school day so I will need to collaborate

with my learners’ families to do so. To meet this learning goal, I will communicate with families

our learning goal via my weekly newsletter. I will let them know their learners will be bringing

home a Moon Book from our Mystery Science curriculum to observe moon patterns for a month

(Mystery Science, n.d.). I will send home a printed newsletter with directions for the activity as

well as an email with them too. This will help families understand what the purpose of the lesson

is and what the objectives are for their learners. During the month, I will check in weekly with

families to make sure they are comfortable with the activity by email and phone calls. The Moon

Book will enrich learning for my learners because it is something they will do with their families

after school when the sun sets earlier at night. It will give learners an opportunity to show their

families what they have been learning about patterns with the sun, moon and stars while making

observations of the phases of the moon.

Effectiveness of Family Collaboration Strategy

On-going communication has been established in my classroom from the beginning of

the school year. An inventory was done at back-to-school night, asking families to indicate the

best form of communication for their home. Families indicated that most would prefer email or

phone calls, and a few wanted printed paper copies of any information. To make sure that all
