QUESTION 1 [30 marks] Read the following scenario and then answer the questions that follow. Remember: your answers should relate to the information provided in the scenario. Naledi Lekota is a dedicated working mother who struggles to find time to relax after hours. She has been a pillar of Val-De-Grace Hospital for over a decade and has served as the matron for nearly seven years. In addition to her matron duties, Naledi has often stepped in as the acting operations manager during the absences of her former superior, David Dlamini, who recently and unexpectedly passed away. Despite her qualifications and proven competence, the hospital authorities are not considering her for the permanent position. The directors believe that operations management is a "man's job," and they prefer to fill managerial roles with external candidates to inject "new blood" and foster innovation and creativity. Naledi has always prioritised the well-being of the nursing staff, striving to make the hospital a better workplace. However, the hospital is currently facing a severe staffing shortage due to numerous vacancies. This situation has been exacerbated by a critical shortage of healthcare professionals in the region, as many are leaving for better opportunities elsewhere. The increased competition for skilled professionals has left the remaining staff overworked and struggling to meet the demands of their patients. To address the staffing shortages, Naledi has had to implement emergency measures, including additional shifts and telehealth consultations where possible. Despite these efforts, the staff feel exhausted and undervalued, expressing concerns about their well-being and recognition. Some have indicated that they are considering leaving for jobs with better working conditions. 1.1 HR professionals should recognise that employees generally progress through different career stages. Identify [1 mark] and briefly discuss [1 mark] the career stage in which Naledi finds herself. Substantiate your answer with an example from the case study [1 mark]. (3) 1.2 Identify [2 marks] and briefly discuss [2 marks] two problems that Naledi faces in terms of her career. (4) 1.3 The Board of Directors believes that the operations manager position is more suitable for male employees. Evaluate the legality of this assumption or opinion by referring to the requirements set out in the Employment Equity Act, no 55 of 1998. (2) 1.4 Identify the recruitment source that was used to attract suitable candidates for the managerial vacancies at the hospital [1 mark]. Secondly, outline four advantages [4 marks] and four disadvantages [4 marks] of using this recruitment source. Finally, explain how this recruitment source affects Val-De-Grace, considering its current staffing challenges [1 mark]. (10) 1.5 You have read an article highlighting the benefits of internal staffing for organisations. Convince the Board of Directors to adopt an internal staffing strategy that ensures fairness in the hospital's selection and promotion procedures. In your response, discuss the advantages of implementing an internal staffing strategy. (6) HRM2605: Assessment 03 Semester 02 (2024) 8 © UNISA 2024 1.6 The following snippet was obtained from the scenario: “Some staff members even said that they would leave as soon as they found another job that offered better working conditions.” Evaluate this statement and advise Naledi on the actions that she can take to ensure that the employees do not leave the organisation. (5) QUESTION 2 [7 marks] Complete the task by following the steps below. Step 1: Search the internet using any search engine (e.g. Google).
