Personification of Continents. Stereotypes or Early Ethnography Sources in the Rijksmuseum Collection Four continents were known in early-modern Europe: America, Europe, Asia and Africa. A popular theme in European art and cultural representation was the imagination of the continents in female figures or personifications displaying or wearing specific attributes ascribed to these continents. By contrasting the continents European artists showed specific presumptions about what it meant to be European, and how Europe and Europeans related to the other continents and its inhabitants. This document consists of four separate pictures of the continents. The following questions are answered about the pictures. How are the other continents displayed? What symbolic meaning can be deduced from the specific elements of the portrayals? What sort of ideas do these elements demonstrate? How is Europe contrasted with the depictions of the other continents? How did the artists position ‘Europe’ vis-à-vis the rest of the world? What do we think this tells us about the way Europeans saw the development of their continent compared to the rest of the world, and how do we think this has changed after 1800? Point out at least two visual elements per continent in your answer. There at least made use of 4 scientific/academic references (articles, books or book chapters) to answer the questions.
