Case Study 1: Six-Week-Old Infant Poisoning (10 marks)

Approach:

1. Immediate Action: Contact the hospital to gather detailed medical information
about the infant's condition and prognosis. Confirm if the child is stabilized and
what follow-up care will be necessary.
2. Risk Assessment: Assess the home environment, including the mental health
and behavior of the 16-year-old mother, her relationship with her own mother,
and the safety of the two older children.
o Risks Identified:
 Severe physical harm or death of the infant.
 Mental instability or stress of the teenage mother.
 Neglect or possible harm to the two other children in the household.
3. Legal and Child Protection Steps: Immediately notify child protection services
(CPS) and the police for an emergency intervention. The case warrants criminal
investigation due to the deliberate poisoning.
4. Emergency Removal of Children: Recommend immediate removal of all three
children from the household for safety. Temporary foster care may be needed.
5. Counseling for Mother: The 16-year-old mother requires urgent psychiatric
