This is a sample ESS Internal Assessment under my chosen topic of "Algae Wastewater Treatment". This document can be used as a reference guide for students to understand the steps for writing a good internal assessment report for this IB subject. This report helped me achieve a level 7 for undertaking a unique area of interest in the course.

How do factors affecting water quality reflect in algae wastewater treatment?

Introduction:

In the years ahead, the human population will continue to grow; despite whether a country

implements a pro-natalist or anti-natalist policy. With a larger human population awaiting us

in the near future, the planet will be under greater pressure to fulfil the physiological needs of

all living organisms. Even if humans have the ability to reduce their population, climatic

conditions will continue to make the struggle for resources even worse - enhanced global

warming effect. Such environmental conditions will make it hard for living organisms to

obtain sufficient food and water supply to survive.

Scientific innovation has brought wonders to the field of sustainability; countries now have

access to technologies such as rainwater harvesting systems and desalination plants to

provide supply of freshwater for human consumption. However, such technologies are

mostly affordable for MEDCs and not LEDCs. Matters are worse when LEDCs have a large

population and live in harsh climatic conditions (e.g Deserts, Arctic Tundras). Such

communities are unfortunate as they can’t afford to provide fresh water supply to their whole

population.

To improve the accessibility of freshwater supply to such unfortunate communities across

the globe, I have conducted a research investigation to assess the appropriateness of algae

wastewater treatment. The process is a form of bioremediation, and its application in water

purification was conducted by Rochester Institute of Technology. The scientists stated that

the process is “double sustainable” as the bi-products include clean water as well as biofuel

(Gawlowicz, 2011). The process is known for its ability to purify the water of its nitrate,

phosphate, and pathogen content. If the process is proven to be successful, we can then

widely implement the solution across all rural societies having scarce water resources. This

is because the process is not as expensive compared to processes such as desalination.
