biological and environmental influences
•emotions are shaped by biological foundations and by one's
experiences
•facial expressions of basic emotions such as happiness, surprise,
anger etc, are the same across cultures
-primary basic emotional expressions are universal (ex: blind
children)
early emotions
•in the first 6 months: surprise, interest, frustration, fear,
disgust
•other emotions appear in 2nd half of 1st year and by 2nd year
-jealousy, empathy, embarrassment, pride, and shame
-these emotions have been called self conscious emotions or
other conscious emotions
crying:
•crying is the most basic way infants express emotions and
communicate
•at least 3 types of cries
- basic cry: some infancy experts believe that hunger is one of
the conditions that incite the basic cry
- anger cry
- pain cry (colic)
smiles:
•two types of smiling can be distinguished
reflexive/endogenous smile - (having an internal cause or origin)
does not occur in response to external stimuli
- appears during 1st month usually during sleep
