TRL3708
ASSIGNMENT NO: 01

SEMESTER 2

YEAR : 2024

, Introduction
The World Health Organization (WHO) plays a crucial role in managing and supporting
health logistics operations in South Africa, particularly in the procurement and
distribution of medical supplies, including vaccines, medicines, and essential health
equipment. As global health challenges become increasingly complex, leveraging
advanced supply chain information systems (SCIS), blockchain technology, enterprise
resource planning (ERP) systems, and advanced planning and scheduling (APS)
systems is essential for ensuring the efficiency, transparency, and reliability of these
operations. This assignment explores how these technologies can provide a
competitive advantage to WHO and the South African health sector, enhance the
planning and execution of health logistics, and ensure the efficient supply of critical
medical resources.

1. Supply Chain Information Systems (SCIS) and Competitive Advantage
Supply chain information systems (SCIS) play a critical role in linking logistical
activities into an integrated process, thereby enhancing the efficiency and
effectiveness of supply chain operations. Through the implementation of a system like
SCIS, WHO and the South African health sector can benefit from the provision of ideal
information flow, real-time decision-making that hastens the health system, and
enhanced supply chain postulation. SCIS operates across four levels of functionality:
transaction systems, management control, decision analysis, and strategic planning.
All of these levels play a part in developing a strong and sustainable supply chain that
is able to react to its environment appropriately.

a. Transaction Systems

Transaction systems form the foundation of SCIS by handling the day-to-day
operations required to manage and track the movement of goods, information, and
funds within the supply chain. These systems are important in the processing of supply
chain transactions, including order entry, receipt of inventory, and shipping. Some of
the critical specifications that apply to transaction systems include the ability to secure,
flexibility, and the ability to perform transactions quickly and accurately (Bowersox et
al., 2020). Both for the WHO and the South African health sector, transaction systems
management of essential medical supplies, procurement, and distribution are crucial.
WHO can ensure that it processes the orders in the most efficient manner while
