Duration of lesson: 35 minutes


Lesson Aims: (DoBE, 2011)

- Understanding matter and materials
- Developing scientific process skills (inquiring, observation, comparing, classifying,
measuring, experimenting and communicating)
- Understanding different colours and textures of soils


Teaching approaches: Required resources:

Structured Activity, Whole group-guided activity, Different types of soil in little containers
Independent station and Constructivism with flashcards of names of soil, “Getting
to know soil Worksheet 1”. Glue, scissors,
pencils and Natural Science activity
books.

Introductory activity/warmer:
10 min
All learners sitting on the mat for introduction of lesson. Have four containers with
different textures of soil in them. Discuss different textures with learners and allow a
few volunteers to come up and match the soil name with the soil jar.


Stages of lesson:

1. Whole Group Guided work: Allow each learner to come up to feel and see 20 min
the differences one by one. As learners come up they will complete the
“Getting to know soil worksheet”. Once all learners complete their “Getting to
know soil worksheet” they will move to their independent stations to
complete the worksheet.

2. Independent Station: Learners will cut out their worksheets and paste them 5 min
in their natural science activity books.

- Make notes in teacher’s observation book while learner’s complete worksheet. (Note: ability to
communicate using thoughts and understanding concepts by use of senses) (Killen, 2015).

Structured Activity, small groups activity, Whole Different types of soil in transparent plastic
group-guided activity and Constructivism bags with little dishes to put the soil in too. Soil
word wall (on A3 card with tape) science

rulers, water, colour charts

Introductory activity/warmer:
All learners sitting on the mat for introduction of lesson. Have four transparent 5 min
plastic bags with different textures of soil in them. Discuss different textures with
learners and allows learners to get into groups of four. Each group will get their own
dishes with different soil textures in them and a magnifying glass and a bottle of
water.

Stages of lesson:

1. Small Group activity: Learners will experiment with their different soil 20 min
dishes using their magnifying glass, rulers and colour charts. Learners
will observe what the dry soils characteristics are and they will record
their observations in their individual workbooks but as a team. Once
learners have observed the dry soil, they will add a bit of water to each
dish and compare observe the wet soil. Learners will then compare their
observations of the wet soil with their observations of the dry soil.

2. Whole group – guided activity: Learners will bring all their equipment 10 min
back to the teacher’s desk and then sit on the mat in front of the board
with their workbooks on their laps. On the board the teacher will have the
Soil word wall where learners will volunteer to add to it and the teacher
will guide learners to extend their vocabulary on colours, textures and
other observations of soil.
