13th amendment - -1865. Amendment abolishing and continually prohibiting slavery. With limited
exception, such as those guilty of committing a crime, it also prevents indentured servitude.

-14 points - -A plan created by President Woodrow Wilson that tried to state that World War I should
never be repeated and laid out steps to prevent a repeat occurrence; Became the basis for the terms of
Germany's surrenders

-14th amendment - -1) Citizenship for African Americans, 2) Repeal of 3/5 Compromise, 3) Denial of
former confederate officials from holding national or state office, 4) Repudiate (reject) confederate
debts

-15th amendment - -All men can vote regardless of race

-3/5 compromise - -the decision at the Constitutional convention to count slaves as 3/5 of a person for
the purpose of deciding the population and determining how many seats each state would have in
Congress

-AAA - -Agricultural Adjustment Act: Administration run by President that subsidizes farmers

-alliances - -Agreements or promises to defend and help another country

-amendment process - -An amendment is proposed by Congress by a two-thirds vote in each house. If
passed it is a change or addition to the constitution

-Andrew Carnegie - -A business man that increased his power through by gaining control of the many
different businesses that make up all phases of steel production development.

-antitrust - -Laws designed to promote competition and prevent unfair practices that may lead to
monopolies or suppression of competition.

-Arms Race - -Cold war competition between the U.S. and Soviet Union to build up their respective
armed forces and weapons

-Article of Confederation - -Document that was the first constitution of the United States. (gave states
too much power)

-Big Stick Diplomacy - -Foreign policy developed by T.R where the "big stick" symbolizes his power and
readiness to use military force if necessary. It is a way of intimidating countries without actually harming
them and was the basis of U.S. imperialistic foreign policy.

-Bill of Rights - -A formal statement of the fundamental rights of the people of the United States,
incorporated in the Constitution as Amendments 1-10, and in all state constitutions.

, -Black codes - -Laws passed in southern states that limited civil liberties of black Americans after the civil
war

-Brown v Board of Education - -1954 - The Supreme Court overruled Plessy v. Ferguson, declared that
racially segregated facilities are inherently unequal and ordered all public schools desegregated.

-camp David agreement - -Carter's greatest foreign policy achievement. This was when the president of
Egypt and the Prime Minister of Israel both agreed to a very promising peace treaty at the presidential
retreat in the Maryland Highlands.

-Capitalism - -Economic and political system in which individuals control Business for profit

-Carpetbaggers - -Political candidate who seeks election in area where they have no connections

-CCC - -Civilian Conservation Corp: 250,000 immediate jobs for men ages 18-25 and paid them $30 a
month; fought forest fines; completed flood control projects

-Civil liberties - -Freedom to exercise rights such as speech, assembly without government interference.
Protected by the Bill of Rights

-Civil Rights - -Policies designed to protect people against arbitrary or discriminatory treatment by
government officials or individuals

-Cold War - -A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly
confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years.

-Containment - -A goal to stop the spread of communism. The US had to use military and non military
actions to stop the spread.

-Court Packing - -Attempt by Roosevelt to appoint one new Supreme Court justice for every sitting
justice over the age of 70 who had been there for at least 10 years. Wanted to prevent justices from
dismantling the new deal. Plan died in congress and made opponents of New Deal inflamed.

-Cuban Missile Crisis - -1962 confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union caused by
Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba

-Dust Bowl - -A 1930's natural disaster in the Great Plains when a combination of farming practices and
drought leave farmland dry and unproductive.

-elastic clause - -Section of the Constitution that allows Congress to extend its powers/duties - also
known as the necessary and proper clause.

-Engel v Vitale - -1962: Prohibited state-sponsored recitation of prayer in public schools by virtue of the
1st Amendment's Establishment Clause and the 14th Amendment's Due Process Clause.

-English Bill of Rights - -King William and Queen Mary accepted this document in 1689. It guaranteed
certain rights to English citizens and declared that elections for Parliament would happen frequently. By
