Metro pumping stations - ANSLocated in low points in metro stations. Remove groundwater,
storm runoff, or water associated with fire fighting efforts.
Rail car battery backup system - ANSThis system runs for 60 minutes after power failure. Keeps
lights and communication systems operational until system starts to load shed, first dropping
lights, then communications.

department - ANSResponsible for maintaining clear, safe, and navigable railways and right of
way: metro bridges fences walls gates lighting and security structures.
MOCC - ANSMetro operations control center located above Lexington market
Metro stations - ANSThere are 14 stations in the metro system. Three stations at surface, three
are Ariel, and eight are underground.
Yard Tower - ANSControls activity in the wabash yard. In the event of an emergency the yard
tower can assume control of operations.
Interlockings - ANSCrossover areas that contain remotely controlled train switches, also called
crossover switches,that allow trains to switch tracks. Dangerous and should be approached with
caution.
Track bed - ANSBuilt up from grade, lined with ballast or stones, that distribute the weight of the
rails and trains. Cross ties are laid on top of the ballast and rails run over the cross ties.
Chain markers - ANSLocated every 200 feet, chain markers identify track locations relative to
Charles center. Letters indicate whether the track is either Northwest or north east of Charles
center; numbers indicate the number of feet from Charles center.
Who must be notified before entering any track area. - ANSMOCC or the yard tower.
