M1 Explain the roles of two different organisations within the travel and
tourism component industries and how they interrelate.
British Airways and Iberia:
British Airways is the flag carrier and the largest airline in the United Kingdom based
on fleet size, or the second largest, behind easyJet, when measured by passengers
carried. The airline is based in Waterside near its main hub at London Heathrow
Airport. Iberia, legally incorporated as Iberia, Líneas Aéreas de España, S.A.
Operadora, Sociedad Unipersonal, is the flag carrier airline of Spain, founded in 1927.
Based in Madrid, it operates an international network of services from its main base
of Madrid-Barajas Airport.
An example of interrelationships is British Airways and Iberia. British airways and
Iberia ceased to be independent companies but instead became merged. It is the
sixth-largest airline company in the world, producing €22.972 billion revenue in
2017. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and the Madrid Stock
Exchange. British Airways currently operates two joint businesses which enable the
airline to give more choice to its customers. British Airways launched its transatlantic
joint business with Iberia and American Airlines on October 1, 2010. The agreement
allowed British Airways and Iberia to work closely with American Airlines on flights
between North America and Europe. It is a revenue sharing agreement under which
member airlines have permission to co-ordinate schedules and pricing on North
Atlantic routes. These two companies are an example of horizontal integration as
they are both the same type of company and merging together to benefit more
people. British airways also works with companies like marks and spencer’s who
provide the meals on board. British airways joined marks and Spenser to offer their
customers a good quality food for their flight whether it be short or long haul flight.
Both company’s would then be getting benefits out of this as they would be both
making better business and more profit. British airways and Iberia integrate really
good as now they are one they can fly to more unique destinations which attracts
more customers who want to see different countries and different cultures. A lot of
customers benefited from British airways and Iberia merging as they could travel to
further away and new destinations which British airways didn’t use to offer before
merging. These two company’s merging meant they had a better interrelationship as
they could earn more income and profits.
