Sheila
At the start of the play:
Child like, naïve, giddy as she announces to her family the engagement
between herself and Gerald.
‘ mommy look at the ring isn’t it’ as well as ‘ill never let it out of my sight for
an instant.’
This demonstrates the power the ring and Gerald had over her. As woman
were silenced by the hierarchy that men had over them.
Later on in Act 1 she starts to demonstrate a sense of maturity peeking
through her child like behaviors.
Later on in the play:
Sheila becomes more aware of what real life is like and what trouble many
woman were going through.
She recognizes her faults and what role she played towards Eva’s death.
‘ but these girls are not cheap labor they are people’
‘ so im really responsible’
These demonstrates feminism starting to creep into Sheila’s traits/ opinions.
It also demonstrates that Sheila is starting to believe in some of the socialist
views.
