o Uncontrolled but given standards.
o Obey God regardless of reason/conflict.

 Epistemic distance caused OS but saveable via atonement/grace.
 Can be morally neutral as nobody born good or bad.
 Human interference worsens.

Before The Fall

 Concordia – easy and comfortable relationships that good friends have.
 Concupiscence – desire.

 Adam and Eve goal.
 Perfect world in loving friendship and purity.
 Friendship increases acceptance and happiness as social.
 Concupiscence absorbs emotion and distracts from God.

 Fatherly authority to guide and protect.

 IN CONFESSIONS  two essential things for humans are friendship and health.

After The Fall

 Repressive political authority w/ virtues controlling sin by force.
 Society cannot function as OS caused corruption and sin.
 Good people must submit to authority of bad people to learn humility.
 Earthly peace compromise between sinful human wills as truce to ensure access to material goods.

 Christians must focus on achieving heavenly peace.

 GENESIS  made to rule over the Earth not each other.
 ROSSEAU  ‘man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.’

Free Will

 Path of cupiditas – unhappy as have egocentric temporary love of material goods w/ error of will.
 Path of caritas – spiritually happy as have agape love of others expressing God’s will as eternal law.
 Soft Determinism – flexibility.
 Hard determinism – absolute.

 Abuse cause directional change to evil-driven.
 OS fatally harmed human nature and inherited.
 Cannot live morally pure or reach God’s standards.

 God blameless as omnibenevolent and punishment justified.
 Saved at atonement via grace.

 Analogy of the Sick:
o OS inheritable weakening disease.
o Undiagnosable and incurable unless via grace.
o Church is hospital for recovery and development.
