, ASSESSMENT 3
Emergent Mathematics
EMA1501
QUESTION1
1.1. Shape and space are important concepts in emergent mathematics as they help
children develop their spatial awareness and understanding of the world around them.
By exploring shapes and spaces, children can learn to identify and describe objects
based on their attributes, understand the relationship between objects and their
position in space, and develop their problem-solving skills.

1.2. Visual skills are important in learning shape and space as children need to be able to
visually identify shapes and objects in their environment. Verbal skills are important for
children to be able to communicate and describe shapes and spaces.
Movement/kinesthetic skills are important as they allow children to physically interact
with shapes and spaces, helping them understand concepts through hands-on
experiences. Tactile skills are important as they allow children to feel and touch different
shapes and objects, enhancing their understanding of textures and spatial relationships.

1.3. Position refers to the location of an object in relation to other objects or a reference
point, while direction refers to the way in which an object is facing or moving. For
example, in a classroom, a pencil might be positioned on the table next to a book. In
terms of direction, a student might be asked to turn left when exiting the classroom.

1.4. Obstacle course materials: cones, hula hoops, bean bags, tunnels, and balance
beams.

Instructions:
1. Start by standing behind the cones.
2. Walk forward towards the hula hoop and jump inside.
3. Step over the bean bags to reach the tunnel.
4. Crawl through the tunnel and come out at the other end.
5. Balance on the beam and walk to the finish line.
