EXP3604 Exam 3 Practice Questions and Correct Answers
What is metacognition? Metacognition is your knowledge about and control of your cognitive processes ("thinking about your own thoughts"). What is a memory strategy? A memory strategy is when we perform mental activities that can help to improve your encoding and retrieval (effort to essentially improve our memory). Which memory strategy would be the most effective when trying to learn names? Explain Keyword method would be the most effective memory strategy because we're associating the new names with information we already know. To remember the memory strategies presented in this chapter, try relating them to your own studying habits. Which effect is being applied here? Self-reference effect. Briefly describe divided attention. Divided attention is when our attention is divided towards two different stimuli (it's literally in the 0000ing name). What is the levels of processing approach? Levels of processing states that we use different levels of cognitive processing depending on the task, and it emphasizes the importance of deep processing for meaningful memorization (focus on elaboration and distinctiveness versus simple rehearsal). • Deep processing is less concerned with "what", and more concerned with "why" questions How does it differ from survival processing? Survival processing is an even deeper form of processing (deeper than semantic-based) where you evaluate items/information based on whether it will help survive (Grasslands study). • Information/items that will increase your likelihood of survival are encoded stronger. o Has its basis in evolution ("survival of the fittest") How can questioning what you are reading while studying help improve your score on the exam? Think about levels of processing and the generation effect. By questioning what we're reading, we are (1) putting in more effort and testing yourself, both of which lead to better recall, and (2) generating answers to the questions we're asking (making the associations ourselves) leads to deeper processing/encoding and thus, better call. What is the generation effect? Memory is better when we generate associations ourselves versus when we simply read them.
