PYC3705: TRANSFORMATIVE COUNSELLING
ENCOUNTERS

ASSIGNMENT 01: 21 MAY 2021
SEMESTER UNIQUE NUMBER: #872450 for

Name: ****
Student Number: ***

QUESTION 1

What is a helping relationship in Counselling? (3)

Helping relationship is a constant factor throughout the counselling process, which
aims at ensuring that the responsibility for change and growth remains with the
client. Essentially, in accordance with the Study guide (PYSC3705/Study
guide,2021, p.101) it is about helping others to help themselves, and helping them to
grow in the way that they choose.

Though and ideally the counselling is an appointment that the clients have with
themselves (PYSC3705/Study guide,2021, p.101), the counsellor should create and
maintain a safe and honest atmosphere where a client can be able to realise,
appreciate, express their potential and inner-ability in living a good life on their own.

This helps the client to develop an ability for self-determination, self-actualisation,
well-being and appropriate interpersonal relationships (PYSC3705/Study
guide,2021, p.101).

Throughout the counselling process and through this helping relationship it must be
communicated to the client that it is eventually the responsibility, obligation and right
of the client to choose how they tackle their own problems or issues.

1

, QUESTION 2

Why is Counselling different to other helping relationships? (3)

Counselling is basically about helping the client helping themselves to change and
grow in the way they choose, unlike other encounters such as parental or friendship
advices, for instance, which are mainly imposing the worldviews of the person that
gives the advice.

Counselling support client to make decisions on his own and improve his capacity to
make him feel better. The counsellor must to do this without enforcing his or her own
view on how the client must undertake the change. Enforcing own views when
helping people is often done, in contradiction to the formal counselling, by a parent, a
good friend or a good colleague.

Furthermore, Counselling encourages a process of positive change where the
Counselor ensures that this relationship exists specifically for this, and does not stray
into other roles. In contrast to friends and family a counsellor has more formal
relationship with the client, he or she will help reduce confusion by helping the
person explore and understand the current situation as a forerunner to making and
carrying out plans of action. A safe and confidential space will be provided in which
the individual expresses thoughts openly (PYSC3705/Study guide,2021, p.101).

It is now my knowledge that the Counselling is not an advice-giving process,
because the advice-giving is a one-way communication process, which does not
empower the client to work through the problem, as the client is not active in the
process. And generally, people may often seek for advice when feeling helpless
because they want to evade and circumvent the tedious process for fundamental
change in their lives.

Therefore, Counselling is there to urge individual not to evade and circumvent this
fundamental change and to encourage the individual to undertake an often tedious
process of contemplation, self-searching and change through the Counselling based
helping relationship.
