12 types of poetry
Narrative Poetry - answer-tells a story. Ballad - answer-is a traditional poem that tells a story. They are often written to be sung or read aloud. Blank Verse - answer-is a type of poetry with unrhymed lines, but a regular "beat" or pattern of syllables. Elegy - answer-is a poem of seriousness and sorrow. An elegy is often about the death of someone whom the poet admired. Epic - answer-tells of a legendary hero of history or tradition Free Verse - answer-is poetry that is free from fixed patterns of rhythm or beat Haiku - answer-is a form of Japanese poem with three lines. The number of syllables per line alternates: five in the first line, seven in the second line, and five again in the third line. They describe moments in nature or reflect the poet's feelings about nature. Light Verse - answer-includes funny or playful types of poems. One example is the limerick. Lyric poetry - answer-is short and musical. It usually describes the poet's personal thoughts and feelings. Ode - answer-is usually a long, serious poem written to honor or praise of someone or something Prose Poetry - answer-is poetic language presented in unlined form. Its lines are undivided and it doesn't follow any set poetic form or rhyme pattern. Sonnet - answer-is a poem with 14 lines, usually of 10 syllables per line, that follows one of a few possible rhyming patterns. Most sonnets are about romantic love. Limerick - answer-A five line poem with a set pattern of rhythm and rhyme. Line - answer-a single row of words; also called a verse Stanza
