structure and
functions
1.) Where is DNA Located
Location of DNA:
A. Present in the nucleus (nuclear DNA) – makes up genes on chromosomes
B. Present in mitochondria (mitochondrial DNA)
C. Present in chloroplasts (plants)
2. ) What is the history of DNA:
A. 1952 – Rosalind Franklin and her assistant Maurice Wilkins researched the
structure of DNA using X-ray.
B. Watson and Crick did independent research on DNA. they proposed a 3-D
double helix model for DNA.
C. 1962 – Watson and Crick received the Nobel Prize.
D. Wilkins received an award for his X-ray photography. Franklin had died of
cancer.
3. What is Structure of DNA:
A.The natural shape of the DNA molecule is a double helix.
B.Each strand of the helix is made up of a sequence of DNA nucleotides.
4. What are the Three components of a DNA nucleotide:
A. Nitrogenous bases linked by weak hydrogen bonds: Four nitrogenous
bases of DNA: adenine, thymine , cytosine , guanine. A to T and G to C .
B.Sugar portion (deoxyribose in DNA)
C.Phosphate portion.
5. What is the Functions of DNA:
A. DNA makes up genes which carry hereditary information
B. DNA contains coded information for protein synthesis
