What are some of the challenges you have faced or are currently
facing in your studies? Can you describe a specific situation or
situations where you encountered a setback in your academic
journey? (10)
As a student who is pursuing a degree in teaching. During my second year,
I was excited to take an advanced programming course that involved
developing complex ways of dealing with children and understanding their
behaviour. However, despite my initial enthusiasm, I found the course
challenging and struggled to understand the concepts. I dedicated long
hours to studying, seeking help from classmates and professors, and even
attending tutoring sessions from both UNISA and private persons. Despite
my efforts, my grades on assignments and exams were lower than
expected. As a result, my confidence started to wane, and I began to doubt
my abilities in Psychology. Feeling discouraged, I started questioning
whether a degree in Psychology was the right path for me. I felt
overwhelmed by the coursework and doubted if I would ever catch up. It
became increasingly difficult to stay motivated, and my overall academic
performance suffered as a result.
However, I didn't let this setback define me. I reached out to my professor
for guidance and attended office-available course online classes offered by
the university regularly. I also joined study groups to collaborate with
classmates facing similar challenges. Through perseverance and a
proactive approach, I gradually began to grasp the course material. While
my grades in that particular course might not have fully recovered, I learned
valuable lessons in resilience, problem-solving, and seeking support. I
adjusted my study strategies, sought additional resources, and utilized
online platforms to practice programming.
Ultimately, I realized that setbacks are a natural part of the academic
journey, and they shouldn't define my capabilities or determine my future
success. As we speak, I continued to pursue my degree in teaching,
adapting my approach to my strengths and weaknesses and ultimately
graduating with a well-rounded skill set.
