Electric Craft Helper (ECH) LADWP Knots, Bends , and Hitches Bowline - ANSWER Universal knot used for easy tie & untie applications. Never jams or slips if properly tied. Running Bowline - ANSWER Runs freely on the standing part, is easily untied and is very strong and efficient. Attaches a rope to the end of a limb that is too small to climb out on. Carrick Bend - ANSWER One of the strongest knots, can't jam, always draws tight under load. Requires two ropes. Catspaw - ANSWER Attaches a rope to a hook or a post. Clove Hitch - ANSWER Quick, simple method of fastening a rope around a post or tree limb. Binds extremely tight and may be virtually impossible to free quickly if rope is wet. Figure Eight Knot - ANSWER Ideal basic knot generally tied at the end of a rope. Doesn't jam as easily as overhand knot, doesn't injure rope fibers. Can act as a hand-hold or prevent the rope end from slipping thru a block/eye. Half-Hitch - ANSWER The start of other hitches and by itself acts as a temporary attaching knot. Used as backup to help secure another knot. General department policy is to use two (2) half-hitches back to back. Square/Reef Knot - ANSWER Ties together two ropes of the sam e diameter.
