PSYCH 282 - B-Mod Midterm 1 Questions And Answers With Latest Updates
Behaviour - a simple action; what people do or say What are some characteristics of behaviour? (5) - - It involves a persons actions; described with action words. - It has dimensions (frequency, duration, latency, and intensity). - It can be observed, described, or recorded by others or by the person engaging in the behaviour - Has an impact on the physical + social environment. - It is lawful. Its occurrence is systemically influenced by environmental events. Overt Behaviour - - an action that can be observed and recorded by a person other than the one engaging in that behaviour. - can be objectively measuresed ex. verbal (language use) or motor (using your body) Covert Behaviour - also called "private events" (Skinner); not observable by others, may only be observed from overt behaviours. Behaviour Modification AKA b-mod - - includes analyzing the relationship between environment and behaviour and changing the environment to help people modify their behaviour - these are applied to reach the goal of improving people's lives What does the term 'Analyzing' mean in the context of B-mod? - identifying the functional relationship between environmental events and a particular behaviour to understand the reasons for that behaviour or why someone behaved the way they did. What does the term 'Modifying' mean in the context of B-mod? - developing and implementing procedures to help people change their behaviours.Target Behaviour - the behaviour to be modified. Behavioural Excess - an undesirable target behavior the person wants to decrease in frequency, duration, or intensity. ex. smoking Behavioural Deficit - a desirable target behavior the person wants to increase in fre- quency, duration, or intensity. ex. exercise, studying Response - one instance or occurrence of a behaviour Response Class - a group of responses with the same function; that is, each response in the group produces the same effect on the environment (the same consequences) e.g., you could drink 1 cup of water from a glass, you could drink it from a bottle, or you could drink it from a coconut using a straw Repertoire - the collection of all behaviours a person can perform "Dead Man" Test (Ogden Lindsley, 1965) - A way of defining behaviour. "If a dead man can do it, then it ain't behavior, and if a dead man can't do it, then it is behavior" Theoretical Research - conceptual thinking, done at a computer, at a desk, in an office Experimental Research - basic research, often with animals in a lab Applied Research - practical research and treatments to solve a problem, usually on people, in the real worldBehaviourism - - belief that behaviour is lawful and controlled by environmental events in close temporal relation to the behaviour. - philosophy of the science of behaviour Experimental Analysis of Behaviour (EAB or behaviour analysis) - basic scientific research on the functional relationship between environmental events and resulting behaviour
