In 1009 verwoestte kalief al-Hakim de Heilige grafkerk in Jeruzalem. Daarna werd het steeds
gevaarlijker om naar Jeruzalem te reizen voor christelijke pelgrims.
In 11e eeuw veroverden de Seldsjoeken grote delen van Midden-Oosten (ook Jeruzalem). Niet
vriendelijke tegenover christenen, bedreigden het Byzantijnse rijk (oost-Romeinse rijk). Leider van dit
rijk vroeg hulp aan west-Europa omdat zijn leger te slap was.
In 1094 stierven belangrijke Islamitische leiders, hun positie verzwakte. In 1095 vroeg de leider de
Paus om hulp voor zijn strijd tegen de Seldsjoeken.
Paus Urbanus de 2e roept in 1095 op tot een kruistocht (gewapende pelgrimstocht) (als men
meedeed kregen ze een plekje in de hemel) met als doelen:
1. Veroveren heilige land (al het land om Jeruzalem)
2. Jeruzalem veroveren
3. Hulp bieden aan Byzantynse rijk (Oost-Romeinse rijk)
