WAVES
Definition
A wave is a disturbance that moves outward from its point of origin, transferring energy by
means of vibrations with little or no transport of medium.
Wave Motion
The transmission of energy in a medium due to the oscillatory motion of the particles of the
medium about their means position is called the wave motion.
Classification Of Waves
On the basis of medium
The waves are mainly of two kinds
➔ Mechanical waves
➔ Electromagnetic waves
Mechanical waves
Definition:
The waves produced by oscillation of material particles are called mechanical waves.
Source:
Thesis waves can exist only within a material medium. So a vibrating tuning fork can be the
source of mechanical waves.
Nature:
Mechanical waves are transverse as well as longitudinal in nature
Speed:
Mechanical waves travel with variable speed in different media. For example, sound waves
travel in air with the speed of 332m/s and in sea water its speed is 1470m/s.
Examples:
Common examples of mechanical waves are:
➔ Water waves
➔ Sound waves
➔ Seismic waves etc
