Agenda Item 4.1: Dynamics (benefits and disadvantages) of relying on chatbots when writing
assignments
The Chair, Prof Song, opened the discussion by highlighting the growing concern from academics
regarding the declining students’ performance caused by academic dishonesty. The purpose of the
meeting was to address this issue and share with student representatives the impact of relying on
chatbots when preparing assignments. Dr Sibeko then addressed the committee and mentioned that
students are failing to respond creatively to the background information and scenarios provided in
certain modules. Instead of engaging with the context, students are relying on the internet and
Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate answers and essays. She emphasized that academics are able
to discern when writing styles shift and when answers lack originality.
Nthabiseng, a student representative, expressed her opinion that it was patronizing to suggest the
committee was solely there to educate students about chatbots. She emphasized the need for
students to share their opinions and for academics to share theirs, acknowledging that student
