Summary
The novel consists of letters written by a high school freshman. The letters are written for
someone unknown. Charlie greets him with dear friend. Charlie begins to write after the
suicide of his friend Michael, he feels very alone in the world as school starts. Early in the
year Charlie meets Patrick he is older than Charlie is, he is also gay. Patrick introduces
Charlie to his step-sister Sam. Later on Charlie meets everyone form Patrick and Sam’s
group of misfit friends. Because of this Charlie feels a lot more comfortable at school. At
school he also has a quite unusual friend his english teacher Bill. Because Charlie is very
bright he follows advanced english lessons. In these lessons he met his teacher Bill and Bill
always gave Charlie books to read on which he later had to write a report. He did this for
personal enrichment. He has to read famous English Books. Like: The great gatsby, To kill a
mockingbird. At home Charlie lives with his father, mother and sister. His brother lives at
college and visits them rarely. In his letters Charlie talks about his adventure with his new
friends but also reflects on his deceased aunt Helen. Who he loves dearly. He sometimes
elaborates about the memories he has with her. When you read this book you notice that the
relationship between aunt Helen and Charlie was not healthy. As the story continues,
Charlie’s mental instability becomes clearer. He is obsessed with Aunt Helen, who died on
Charlie’s birthday when Charlie was younger. He feels guilty about her death because she
died when she was out buying him a second present for his birthday. Charlie also falls in
love with Sam but Sam is in a relationship and told Charlie that they are friends. When
Sam’s college boyfriend cheats on her , charlie and Sam kiss but this was not Charlie’s
intention. He just wanted to be there for her. Charlie’s new friend have dealt with difficult
personal problems:drug use, cheating, rejection. It is at the end of the novel when Charlie is
about to have sex with Sam, he realised that his aunt Helen molested him for every week
when he was younger. The fact that Charlie was molested by his aunt is not stated clear in
this books. The writer did this deliberately because sexual abuse is not always clear.

Character
The main character of this book is Charlie. Charlie is fifteen years old. Charlie is quiet,
withdrawn, intelligent, observant high school freshman dealing with a lot of trauma of his
childhood. Charlie comes out of his shell through the relationships he develops over the
course of the school year.

Patrick, he is Charlie’s friend he is a high school senior and he his Sam’s stepbrother. He
has a closeted relationship with Brad. Brad is the quarterback of the football team. Patrick is
openly gay but Brad is not.

Sam, is a high school senior and Patrick’s stepsister and one of Charlie’s best friends.
Charlie has a crush on Sam throughout the entire book. Eventually they will get together but
at that moment Charlie realises he was sexually abused.

The minor character that I want to discuss is Charlie’s sister. She is a high school senior who
is beautiful bit in a abusive relationship. She is very smart and does well on school. But is
