What are the negative implications to self-esteem among students? Consider the experiment discussed in class. (short answer) -The present study targeted all students who received C, D, or F, on the first examination in a large psychology course. -By random assignment, some received weekly messages for the rest of the term aimed at bolstering their self-esteem. A second group received messages aimed at bolstering the sense of internal control and personal responsibility. A third group received no such intervention. All three groups received weekly review questions as study aids. -Students in the control group stayed about the same in all categories. Students in the internal control group stayed about the same with a slight decrease in scores. Students that were bolstered did worse, self-esteem was pushed up, were thought to be over confident and did worse on the exam due to inflated self-esteem and studied less.
