Illegal disposal diapers is one of the major problem in nucleated areas and informal
settlement especially to the local informal settlement where I ’am situated. I chose this
environmental problem because of the negative impact it makes in the community. As a
community member it is my responsibility to be the voice of educating other community
members about the risk associated and the impact to environment and to our livelihood. As a
matter of fact these initially affect the whole community socially, economically and financially.
On this informal settlement it set to dispose largely diapers because of the improper
infrastructures and as a result this pause a big threat to human health and to the
environment.
This illegal dumping is sported in the informal settlement areas at Sicelo, Meyerton under
Midvaal municipality.
In the extent of illegal dumping of disposable diapers at informal settlements it also vary in
the areas around the community depending on various factors such as population density,
access to waste management services, cultural practices, and socioeconomic conditions.
However, it is a significant issue in my areas because of the densely population and most
people does not care about the risk. Disposable diapers pose a particular challenge because
they are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to decompose. When improperly
disposed of, they can accumulate in open spaces, waterways, and drainage systems,
leading to environmental pollution, public health risks, and aesthetic degradation. Like now
when it rains, the diapers are all over the area and children play with them, and as result
most of our children will play with that dirty water which result in skin diseases and other
diseases related.
The illegal dumping of disposable diapers in informal settlements can be attributed to a
combination of factors involving both community and systemic issue.
Individuals living in informal settlements often resort to illegal dumping due to a lack of
access to proper infrastructures. With limited options for waste disposal, some residents find
it easier to discard diapers and pads in open spaces or waterways near their homes and
also this cause a havoc and harm to the animals, as they drink the same water polluted by
the diapers and some eat those diapers and cause them diseases, as result community can
either destroy their own environment or build it, most are ignorant because they want to
prove the incompetency of the municipality and this happen in my areas Sicelo that people
just dump everywhere so that they can blame the municipality at the end
My Perspective from Sicelo Community about the dumping of diapers and pads
As a resident of the Sicelo informal settlement, I am intimately connected to the issue of
diapers and pads’ dumping that plagues our community; I must acknowledge my own role in
contributing to the dumping of diapers and pads. Like many others, I have faced challenges
in accessing proper waste management services, leading to instances where I may have
resorted to improper disposal methods out of convenience or necessity. Despite my
preconception to act responsibly, the lack of viable alternatives and the pressures of daily life
may have influenced my decisions regarding waste disposal, including the disposal of
diapers and pads used by my family.
