Unit 5: Data Modelling

The stages involved in the decision – making process for data modelling

Understanding the scenario:

Before designing or creating a spreadsheet, the user needs to understand what data
modelling is and how is it used. The scenario of the data model is needed, so the developer
needs to understand the scenario and the summary to avoid errors and problems, for
example: identifying the number of potential customers or the costs involved in producing a
new product, making it useful in the spreadsheet.
Following knowing and understanding the definition of data modelling and how is it used as
a new trainee data analyst in a cheese company. I would need to understand the scenario
and its summary to make a spreadsheet with accurate data model and to avoid problems
and errors. If I do not understand the scenario carefully then the spreadsheet would have
inaccurate data with occurring errors and problems, thus not meeting the client and the
company’s requirements.

The process in the scenario is how the client wants the spreadsheet and why they need it,
to understand the choices , the spreadsheet needs to help through the decision by showing
what is going to occur, for example: deciding a price for a new product, how many are
made, their sales, quantities and costs an also business premises the profit for the product
and prices to trading and the public. In which the spreadsheet will need to meet and explore
all the choices.

Identifying information and sources:

The most important factor to consider is if the spreadsheet is trustworthy or not, by
constantly verifying the sources of the information and making sure they are accurate and
usable.
In order to make sure that the spreadsheet is trustworthy or not, I would need to constantly
verify the sources of the information and making sure they are usable for example how
much the company sells in total when the economy growth is good and the opposite, with
correct calculations, while analysing useful which is more important and how to procedure it
to find the key information.

, Unit 5: Data Modelling

Information required:

For the spreadsheet there is key information required for it. identifying the information for
the data model, for example: the profit made or to by producing a new product in the near
future, when the information needed it spotted, the developer can identify where does it
come from.
As there is a load of information required, it is important for me to know the types and
names of cheeses and inputting data and recording the sales of each of the types available,
this is an organisable way so that data model and the spreadsheet can be recognised and
coordinated easily. One of the most things I should consider is the amount of cheese sold
and the selling prices as these are key pieces of information, not identifying the spreadsheet
correctly will lead to inaccurate data, as this allows the company to use this information to
fittingly analyse their cheese sales.
Since the cheese is exported and imported from the Netherlands and France, the exchange
rate is needed to know the value of each cheese, by using a currency converter from euro to
pounds and vice-versa, which also makes part of the key information required to identify.
Without forgetting the future predictions of the sales, the company will have the ability to
find out which type of cheese is sold well and when to sell them to prevent them from time-
wasting, stock and income being lost, thus it allows them to make new objectives to meet.

Information that is already available:

Some of the information in the data is already there, as the developer read through the
scenario, this information might be either old or new. The developer needs to make a
decision carefully if the information is good and relevant enough for the model, this would
involve verifying the sources of information and the core market for that particular new
product.

As there is available information whether it is new old, I need to make a decision and
verifying if that information has a good relevance enough to for my model. For a new
cheese, I would need to verify sources of information which also involves identifying the
company’s market for the cheese and gathering data of the market for the types of cheeses.
