Phonological awareness - Phonological awareness is a broad skill that includes identifying and manipulating units of oral language - parts such as words, syllables, and onsets and rimes. The number of times that you hear the sound of a vowel is the number is the number of syllables in a word. Onset - An onset is the beginning sound in a word, before the vowel. Rime - A rime is the vowel and all the letters after. What is phonemic awareness? - phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes--in spoken words.
