CHOOSE ONE OPTION OF THE THREE
OPTION 1
PART A
My ecological footprint is as per below
- Area needed to live (my house)
- Area Needed to ravel to work (Economic)
- Area needed to play and worship (park, gym, church, shopping malls, graveyards)
- Road to drive on to work and do all the other above stuff.
My footprint is of a middle class consumer orientated person, I don't need land to farm to sustain a
living. I work in a corporate set up so all I need is office space. I rely on farmers to produce food and
stuff so I can buy them.
PART B
"So where do I fit in?"
In the context of my the Ecological footprint, I fall in quadrant 2 (Undeveloped and Sustainable) this
according to the Burdland report is where my present needs are met but compromising the needs of
future generations.
Needs Met
I am able to work, feed myself with food produced in factories, drive a car to work and everywhere I
need to be, have a place to worship and places where I play.
Needs of future Generations
My consumption of energy generated from fossil fuels ( South Africa) is a problem for future and
even current generation due to Climate change, consumption of factory produced foods/ goods is
also a problem as products are produced from raw materials that are either mined from the earth or
haversted through ecologically unfriendly means such as deforestation, this causing climate change.
My work is in retail where we sell products that are mainly sourced from countries that are
unsustainable and lastly the waste that is collected from my home every Monday contributes to the
problem of pollution that in turn leads to climate change.
Clearly if I need to do good, I need to change my way of thinking about our planet, therefore "Crete"
the things I have to do to do Good are important. I need to contribute to the "Solution". Consume
Less energy and , pollute less and plant a garden at my house to reduce consumption.
PART C
Kant do it
Categorical Imperative - an unconditional command to do what is right unconditionally. Kant
believed that motives to action rather than consequences of those actions determines moral value.
Also Kant belived in equity and fairness, that human being cannot benefit from other without
regards for the benefit to others. So unconditionally we must save the planet from extinction. The
average footprint must be 1. 5 hectres but we are currently approaching 1.8, so unconditionally we
must do something to fix this. Additionally we need to bear in mind the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs, we cannot do now what will be to their detriment, we must leave the
