Task 1: NOMINAL DATA – Data Collection and Operational Definitions Nominal data is also known as qualitative because the data items differ on the basis of qualities that can be described by words but not numbers. The researcher uses ‘operational definitions’ to ensure the items are categorized accurately. ‘Operational’ acknowledges that the definition applies specifically to your activities (operations,) and that other definitions may exist. After categorization, the items can be counted and ‘frequencies’ are obtained. Note that frequencies are part of data organization; they are not nominal data. Definitions also show others how the research was conducted. Similar principles apply in areas such as Law. Professional literature in many fields begins with a Definitions section. Use your own items for this task. Choose a variable from the options below. You should have a total of at least 25 items which can be sorted into exactly 4 categories. Choose ONE of the following to be your Nominal Variable: Clothing Art/Craft materials Books Jewelry Stationery items Recorded Entertainment Grooming items Toys Apps Operational Definitions: The Variable Name is descriptive of all the items. You may use the name given in the list or choose a more specific name if it seems appropriate. Provide a clear and concise definition. Categories within a nominal variable are based on the qualities that only some items share. Give a clear, concise operational definition of each category (40 word maximum.) The definition should be clear enough that anyone else would be able to sort the entire collection exactly the way you did. Examples of items in each category may be included after the definition.
