Branch 2 Field Rep (SPCB) Safety/Regulatory Complete Guide A process used to solve pest problems while minimizing risks to people and the environment is called: IPM (Integrated Pest Management). Hey, IPM doesn't mean you can't use pesticides...it means you try other things FIRST instead of always choosing the nuclear option of insecticide. When laundering your PPE in the washing machine, what must be done to the washing machine AFTER you've washed your clothing? After washing the items, run the washer through at least one additional entire cycle without clothing (you do this to get rid of any pesticide residue in the washer left over from your stinky ass clothes:) Brainpower Read More List the ways that pesticides can get into your body (4). And yes, this IS a test question so KNOW it. Skin, Eyes, Mouth, and Lungs as you breath This kind of pesticide exposure involves continuous or repeated contact with a toxic substance over a long period of time (months or years). Chronic This type of poisoning is the severe poisoning which occurs after exposure to a single dose of pesticide Acute Most labels have a special word in capital letters on the front of the label. It tells you what the acute health hazard is. The words you might see are what? Danger OR Danger-Poison; Warning; Caution In pest control we have a phrase regarding pesticide labels. What is that phrase? The Label is the Law What are the three things you would expect to find in the "Precautionary Statements" part of a pesticide label? (Yes, you MUST know this...remember that SAFETY IS A HUGE ISSUE WITH THE SPCB) Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals Environmental Hazards – this contains any necessary warnings about surface waters, drift, organisms to which the product is highly toxic, etc. Physical and Chemical Hazards - this contains product-specific hazards such as flammability. You must wear eye protection when you mix, load, or apply pesticides; clean or repair equipment that was used for pesticides; and anytime the label says so. California MANDATES that all eye protection have 2 things. What are these 2 things? Temple and Brow Protection (see image) This is so pesticide doesn't come in the sides of your goggles or drip down from your eyebrows. Your unibrow might be fantastic but it won't stop pesticide from running down into your eyes! True or False: Regular eyeglasses and sunglasses provide enough protection from pesticide exposure especially during mixing and loading. Miss this one and you're officially an idiot. False. EYEGLASSES AND SUNGLASS SUCK when it comes to keeping pesticide splashes and mist away from your eyes. What are two parts of the body are the most likely to be exposed to pesticides? Your hands and forearms (think about it....you handle pesticide with your HANDS and it can splash up to your FOREARMS) California mandates that the MINIMUM thickness of gloves used for pesticide mixing/loading/application be what? 14mm 3 multiple choice options Can the Structural Pest Control Board implement the use of pesticide safety requirements that are LESS restrictive than the label allows? Read the question SLOWLY. Think about it. No. The label represents the MINIMUM requirements for pesticide safety. If they label says you have to wear long sleeve shirts, then California CAN'T say you can spray pesticide naked (which we can all be thankful for because I promise you, no one wants to see you nude). THE FEDS HANDCUFF THE STATES. Can the Structural Pest Control Board implement the use of pesticide safety requirements that are MORE restrictive than the label allows? READ IT SLOWLY. THINK ABOUT WHAT'S BEING ASKED. Yes! Some of labels don't require the use of eye protection at all....but California absolutely requires it! True or False: Because of their thickness fabric-lined or leather gloves are allowed in both mixing and loading of pesticides and during pesticide application. No--fabric-lined or leather gloves are NEVER allowed (think about it...they would ABSORB PESTICIDE) True or False: You must wear a respirator anytime the label or your employer requires one, or if you are mixing, loading, or applying most pesticides on California's list of Minimal Exposure Pesticides True. PAY ATTENTION--If the LABEL or your EMPLOYER say you have to use it....THEN YOU HAVE TO USE IT. True or False: You must wear clean coveralls (or a long -sleeved shirt and long pants) provided by your employer each day that you work with pesticides with either the word DANGER or WARNING on the label, unless the label says you cannot wear coveralls. TRUE. You may NEVER, EVER wear a short sleeve shirt using pesticides (unless the label allows for it....which most don't...so you can't...and you won't). AND YOUR EMPLOYER IS RESPONSIBLE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH CLEAN SHIRTS AND CLEAN PANTS TO WEAR. You splash pesticide in your eyes. What first aid response should you IMMEDIATELY do? Wash eyes continuously for 15 minutes (sure, you COULD go call 911...but you'll be permanently blind by the time you get to washing your eyes out!) You spill a large quantity of pesticide all over the ground. Aside from using kitty litter, what is another way to contain the pesticide? Again, focus on the word "large" in the question. "Large" isn't a cupful. "Large" is like your 20 gallons of pesticide...not 8 oz. Using Containment Pads (think of women's Maxi pads...only MUCH bigger and SUPER absorbent) It's an INCREDIBLY hot day and you're working in your State of California mandated LONG SLEEVE shirts. What is ONE OF THE MAIN symptoms of HEAT STROKE? Yup. Test question. Guaranteed. Lack of sweating. When you see Stroke, think Sweat. The 2 "s's" in "stroke" and "sweat" go together. So Stroke = no Sweat. It's an INCREDIBLY hot day and you're working in your State of California mandated LONG SLEEVE shirts.
