5 Concepts accepted as Generalist Practice

1.) Theoretical Approach - It is assumed in which individuals, families, groups, organizations, and
communities are viewed as systems within their environments.

2.) Generalist Practitioner - Uses a problem solving plan changed approach to resolve issues
encountered by any of these systems. They follow a designated plan or procedure to get things
done.

3.) Ethical Principles and social work values are significant which include a focus on human well
being, human rights, social and economic justice, appreciation of human diversity.

4.) Practitioner assume a wide range of roles to achieve their goals.

A professional social work role is behavior and activity involved in performing some
designated function that is part of professional social work practice.

5.) Intervention strategies, evaluate the results of work, be competent. Infinite flexibility, solid
knowledge about many things, a wide range of skills.

Purpose of social work (Pincus & Minahan, 1973, p 8.)

1.) Enhance the problem solving and coping capacity of people.

2.) Link people with systems that provide them with resources, services, opportunities.

3.) Promote the effective and humane operation of these systems.

4.) Contribute to the development and improvement of social policy.



6 Major Aspects that make Social Work Unique

1.) Focus on any Problem

Generalist Practitioners are equipped with a range of skills to help identify and examine
problems. They make choices about where their efforts can be best directed.

2.) Targeting the external Environment for change

“to change or influence in or to accomplish their goals “ (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, &
Strom - Gottfried, 2013; Pincus & Minahan, 1973, P. 58.).

(Social Workers must look at where change is essential outside the individual and work with
environment to affect change)
