15. Cytology and Histology
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will learn how to prepare and stain specimens as well as the collection of different
types of specimens that are obtained for cytology and histology in this course. They will
also learn how to prepare tissue for a pathologist's evaluation. They will learn about safe use
and storage of the reagents and chemicals utilized in these departments, which require
specific precautions. The PAP and H&E stain will be described, along with the other steps
required to complete the staining
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
15.1. Describe the basic concepts on morphology, cellular and molecular organization
of human tissues. (CSMLS 2.01)
15.1.1. Describe the composition of the cells and tissues.
15.1.2. Passive and active transport system
15.1.3. Differentiate the microscopic appearance of the basic tissue types that compose all
organs.
15.2. Collecting and processing cytology speciemen applying the principles of routine
practices. (CSMLS 2.08;2.12;CC4.1;5.0;6.0)
15.2.1. Apply the principles of routine practices during cytology specimen collection.
15.2.2 Collect cytology specimens according to requisition and patient
requirements.(CSMLS 2.02;2.09)
15.2.3. Collection procedure for different type of cytology specimens.
15.2.4. Procedure for prefixing of cytology specimen.
15.2.5. Preparation of cytology specimen (labeling and traceability of specimen). (CSMLS
2.06)
15.2.6. Preparaion of different types of cytology for analysis(Manual, centrifugation,
cytospin)
15.2.7. Procedure for PAP staining for analysis.(CSMLS 4.01)
15.2.8. Use of light microscope in cytology analysis.
