EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, the learners should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of Gender and language and its importance in communication;
2. Describe different theories of gender, language and communication;
3. Discuss the social construction of gender identities in the society / sexuality;
4. Examine gender differences in language and conversational style;
5. Explain verbal and nonverbal gender communication;
6. Discuss gender in reading materials and textbooks;
7. Discuss gender in schools;
8. Discuss gender in the media;
9. Discuss gender in the workplace;
10. Explain gendered violence and power;
11. Discuss language reforms in terms of gender neutral language.

COURSE CONTENT
Introduction to gender, language and communication. Theoretical perspectives on gender, language
and communication. The role of gender in the expression and creation of gender identities.
Discourse and the social construction of gender. Gender differences in discourse styles, language
structure and use. Verbal and non-verbal gender communication. Gender in various contexts:
media, workplace; schools. Gendered violence and power. Language reform: Gender neutral
writing; Avoidance of Sexism.
