Chapters 1-16 Cumulative Final Study Guide, The Developing Person, Berger Exam Questions And Answers Emotional Regulation - ANS The ability to control when and how emotions are expressed. Emotional Development - ANS children learn when and how to express emotions. Stable emotional regulation is possible because the limbic system and prefrontal cortex are now connected (e.g., children learn to be angry but not explosive, frightened but not terrified, sad but not inconsolable). Externalizing - ANS powerful feelings burst out uncontrollably, externalizing rage (possibly lashing out or breaking something) Children who externalize might flail, scream, or kick and may grow into adults who react similarly. Internalizing - ANS powerful feelings are turned inward, child will control self too much. Children may sob uncontrollably or blame self. Initiative versus Guilt - ANS Erikson's third psychosocial crisis, in which children undertake new skills and activities and feel guilty when they do not succeed at them. Intrinsic Motivation - ANS when people do something for the joy of doing it; it is a drive that comes from inside a person, such as the need to feel smart or competent (e.g., musician who plays music because s/he enjoys it). (Preschool children are intrinsically motivated, they enjoy playing and learning whether or not someone is watching them (play a game for fun not to win, converse with imaginary friends).) Extrinsic Motivation - ANS comes from the outside, when people do something to gain praise (e.g., musician who plays for applause). Imaginary Friends - ANS Make-believe friends who exist only in a child's imagination; increasingly common from ages 3 through 7, they combat loneliness and aid emotional regulation. Psychopathology - ANS An illness or disorder of the mind. Externalizing Problems - ANS Difficulty with emotional regulation that involves expressing powerful feelings through uncontrolled physical or verbal outbursts, as by lashing out at other people or breaking things.
