Crime and its efeets n s eiety
Managing crime and supportng ictms and witnesses

Describe and analyse the efects of crime on communites and indi iduals

The efects crime has on communites and an indi idual is mostly fnancial howe er it can be physical and
emotonal too. eelow these factors are discussed.

A fear of crime can ha e a large impact on indi iduals and their li es. Some people don’t feel safe alone at
night 5% of people carry weapons 5% of people carry personal atacc alarms 30% of people tra el in groups
for safety and 40% of people a oid walcing near people they thinc are a threat. 1 In antcipaton of crime
people spend money on security measures ‘just in case’. These can include things such as burglar alarms
security staf or CCTV insurance (home insurance) or any other crime pre enton costs which may be incurred
to protect property or business. This has an efect on indi iduals and communites as indi iduals will be
spending a lot of money to ensure they aren’t a ictm of crime meaning communites will be safer. eusinesses
will also gain a lot of proft from their security products which will ultmately go bacc into the community or
area.

As a consequence of crime indi iduals must pay for the cost of stolen or damaged property the cost of
replacing loccs or the cost of losing pay at worc while reco ering if the indi idual was a ictm of crime. This
can ha e a major efect on a person’s life especially if they aren’t well of in the frst place. In response to
crime there are costs for the police being deployed to crime scenes tacing statements sol ing crimes and
their use of resources a cost for prosecuton and a cost for hiring solicitors and legal aid. Other costs include
the cost of holding an ofender in prison if they are found guilty and the costs of the probaton ser ices
monitoring them. There will also be costs for clear-up operatons by the authorites for graft fghts criminal
damage and damage to roadways afer accidents and so on and so forth. Health ser ices incur costs to looc
afer the ictms of crime pro ide ambulances and pro ide a GPi ser ice for afercare. All of these costs afect
communites because the taxpayer must pay for all these ser ices for other people.

Pihysical injury as a result of crime ob iously afects the indi idual. A ictm may sustain minor or major
physical injuries which can tace a long tme to reco er from. Sometmes people don’t fully reco er at all.
Another type of injury is psychological. Pisychological impacts occur afer ataccs on a person and can lea e
lastng damage. Pieople may sufer from PiTSD panic ataccs exhauston depression nightmares and
flashbaccs. Some ictms sufer a lacc of confdence afer a crime which has an impact on their quality of life.
Pieople can feel their lifestyle has sufered because they feel so anxious all the tme something similar will
happen again. Pisychological impacts can be made worse if a person cnows that statstcally they are licely to
be a repeat ictm.

Identfy and analyse how the public ser ices reduce crime disorder and antsocial beha iour
