Timetabling Services in Belfast Met are centralised as working as a team. This is because each
department has to manage many several bookings for each course. The Curriculum Area Manager,
or CAM, decides which courses are run in the college and the school admin staf create a course on a
system known as QL. Belfast Met’s CAM is Moira Watson.
QL is a very old and outdated system which does not have a functoning tmetabling system. A
separate tmetabling system called Scienta has to be run alongside the QL system. QL is forced by
the government so unfortunately the College cannot use an alternatve system. However QL is due
an upgrade in the next few years.
The tmetabling team in the college have to ensure all courses are inputed into Scienta. This means
inputs are very manual on the QL/Scienta system which creates room for error. These errors could
be easily avoided if the system was updated which could check for these errors. Timetabling can be
difficult for the College as there are many diferent courses, campuses and departments.
This diagram illustrates how the system works.
