Question 1.1
The prevalence of workplace bullying may be contributed to by power dynamics within
the workplace, where individuals or groups abuse their power to intimidate or demean
others. This can create an environment where bullying becomes normalized, similar to
the behavior of a narcissistic personality described in the Labour Court case. Another
factor contributing to workplace bullying could be a lack of awareness or education on
what constitutes bullying and harassment. Employers may not have adequate policies or
training in place to address and prevent bullying, allowing it to persist in the workplace.
For example, a manager with unchecked power may engage in bullying behavior towards
their subordinates, creating a toxic work environment. Additionally, employees may not
feel empowered to report bullying due to fear of reprisals, further perpetuating the cycle
of abuse.
