Respiratory examination-signs and symptoms
Cardinal respiratory symptoms:
 Breathlessness-static- lung disease or episodic- angina, acute/chronic
onset,limitations
 Cough- acute,chronic,wet,drug,time of day,upon eating,speaking,occupational
 Sputum
 Haemoptysis- duration,frequency,amount, coughed/vomited, gums,nose
 Chest pain
 Hoarseness-abnormal change to voice




Scales for breathlessness:
Dyspnoea scale 5 most severe- too breathless to leave the house
WHO score- 0-5- dead 4-completely disabled

Scales for cough:
VAS score (Visual analogue score)
LCQ- questionnaire

If new cough with no infection- prompt cancer assessment

Haemoptysis-indicative of PE,severe mitral stenosis,decompensated congestive left heart
failure

Stridor: large airway obstruction

Chest pain:
S- central/L/R sided, retrosternal pain,epigastric
O- sudden, exertional, at rest
C- heavy,crushing,tight,pleuritic
R-left arm,neck,jaw,back
A- Rest,sittingup
T-
E-arm movement,pressure,exercise
S- 1-10

Upon examination- 45 degree angle

Respiratory paraphernalia- (equipment/apparatus)- general inspection
