Title: Combustion of Alcohol
Abstract: in this experiment, I showed how enthalpy theory is applied to combustion of an
alcohol by burning diferent lamp of alcohol and also to prove my hypothesis the number of
carbon atoms existing in alcohol increases and this will make the enthalpy of combustion
negative even more.
Apparatus:
Spirit burner with alcohol, draught shield
Copper calorimeter
Tripod with clamps
Thermometer
Matches
Goggles
Heat proof mat.
Method:
1. Weigh the spirit burner containing the alcohol with the tap on and record its mass.
2. Measure out 100cm3 of water into the copper calorimeter using a measuring
cylinder.
3. Set up the apparatus.
4. Measure and record the temperature of the water.
5. Remove the cap from the spirit burner and immediately light the burner. Repeat this
for each alcohol
Reweigh the spirit burner and record its mass.
Results: Ethanol
