, 1.0 Introduction
In the modern world, humans are rapidly approaching tasks that can be performed by
machines. The machining industry is toward establishing a system that maintains equipment
and parts while monitoring the manufacturing process by installing various sensors and
communication devices on machine tools and their peripheral devices to collect and analyse
data.
The manufacturing process that is selected to review is the cutting process. Cutting tools are
positioned closest to the point of cutting. It has been considered that mounting sensors on a
cutting tool would enable the machining process to be monitored with high accuracy.
However, the sensor that was selected to monitor the cutting process is the Kistler
piezoelectric dynamometer . Hence, this report explained the principle of operation and its
function in the cutting process, sensor selection factor and sensor troubleshooting.
