Overview and Key Concepts of Chapter 1
Artwork that can be distorted or that can simply object matter, but in which the source of the subject matter remains recognizable is called abstract art. There are three different degrees of abstract art, those being:
Changed
Altered
Exaggerated
Artwork that does NOT start or refer to the physical world is called nonrepresentational art . It is
also referred to as non-objective art. Their “subject matter” can be about things like color, form, pattern, spirituality, etc.
Throughout Chapter 1, you will learn:
The difference between active and passive looking.
The preconceptions that may block our understanding of artwork.
How to start forming my own opinions on artwork (i.e.- What do I appreciate about this piece?)
How to see art’s significance through the artist’s perspective.
What is Art?
Art can be defined as the visual expression of feelings, insights, ideas, and experiences. Art can cause us to feel and experience a wide range of emotions, convey our thoughts into a universal ‘language’, and make our lives more exciting. A famous example of art is the Mona Lisa created by Leonardo DaVinci. DaVinci ended up revolutionizing the art of Portage by making the painting looking like it has movement and life. Movement was added by making the Mona Lisa’s shoulders do not line up on both side, which suggests that her shoulders shift as we view her.
