NURS 6512: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning Body-Mass IndexQuestionPost and Answers | Latest 2023/2024 (Graded A+)
NURS 6512: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning Body-Mass Index Obesity is a global health problem that can cause significant challenges in preventing and treating chronic diseases. Body-mass index (BMI) is a commonly used assessment tool to measure obesity and to determine a patient’s nutritional status (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2019). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ([CDC], n.d.), “BMI is a measure of weight adjusted for height, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2 )” (para.1). Once a patient’s BMI is calculated the patient is classified as being underweight (less than 18.5), normal weight (18.5-24.9), overweight (25- 29.9), or obese (30 or higher) (Sullivan, 2019). Obtaining and documenting the patient’s height and weight is a routine component of most clinic visits. Calculating a patient’s BMI is a quick, inexpensive, and noninvasive alternative to measuring body fat (CDC, n.d.). In some cases, BMI can potentially be an effective way to evaluate a person’s risk of developing weight-related diseases, such as coronary artery disease, cancer, and diabetes which are all associated with obesity (Ball et al., 2019).
