The Rise of the Nazis

1919:

● 29th June 1919- Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles
following their loss in WW1. This meant they gave up land, shrunk their
army and paid for damages caused, damaging the economy further.
Many Germans felt betrayed and embarrassed by their leadership.
● September 1919- Former amateur artist and army veteran Adolf Hitler
joins the ranks of the German Workers Party, which later became name
as the Nazi Party.
● Hitler became a gifted public speaker capturing the people’s
disillusionment and calling for a unified Germany, blaming Jew’s for
Germany’s defeat.

1923:

● Hitler and his followers attempted their first government coup but failed.
● Hitler was jailed for treason for nine months; the publicity made him
more popular.

1929:

● The Great Depression began, destroying the German Economy
overnight and leaving millions unemployed.
● Hitler seized the moment and criticised the ruling government and
promised to return Germany to greatness.
● Long-suffering Germans thought they had found their saviour, Hitler.

1932:

● In the German 1932 elections, the Nazi’s won a majority of the seats in
parliament.
● This led to Hitler running for president, which he lost.
● His popularity led to president Paul Von Hindenberg appointing him as
chancellor.
● As chancellor, Hitler tightened his grip on every aspect of Germany,
including tripling the military size, breaching the terms of the Treaty of
Versailles.
