Unit 37 – Business Ethics

Task 2b – Assess changes to make a business more ethical

 McDonalds recycle old cooking oil and uses this to run over half of all its delivery lorries in
the UK. The advantage of doing this means not only can McDonalds look ethical by not using
as much fossil fuels, and thereby reducing their carbon emissions while transportng the
same amount of raw produce, but also this will save McDonalds a large amount of money
over using diesel, as the oil is a waste product, and in abundance, and the costs to clean the
amount of oil, and the transportaton to and from the recycling facility is less than buying
diesel.

 McDonalds has set itself sustainability goals it hopes to achieve by 2020.

 – Supportng sustainable beef producton and beginning purchasing an unspecifed porton
of beef from verifed sustainable sources in 2016.

 – Sourcing 100% of cofee, palm oil and fsh that is verifed to support sustainable
producton.

 – Purchasing 100% of fberrbased packaging from certfed or recycled sources.

 – Serving 100% more fruit, vegetable, lowrfat dairy or whole grains in nine of its top markets.

 – Increasing inrrestaurant recycling by 50%.

 – Increasing energyrefciency in companyrowned restaurants by 20% in seven of its top
markets.’

McDonalds would choose to sell sustainable foods over unsustainable foods as the trends
socially is that sustainable foods are regarded as more ethical and customers prefer to buy
from ethical businesses.

McDonalds bought meat from 9000 sustainable Canadian cows in 2016, with their goal of
trying to achieve beef sustainability. McDonalds reports over 200 onrsite checks took place,
however, does not state what standard of sustainability the checks covered or how many
sites there were in total.

The reason sustainability is sought afer by McDonalds is due to it currently being prominent
in public opinion, which is increasing awareness of sustainability. McDonalds aim to be
sustainable to make people associated with its brand believe it is trying to help and cares
about the planet. However, it could be due to the increased consumers of their products if
McDonalds markets it sustainability.

Another goal is the purchasing of 100% fbre based packaging from recycled or certfed
sources. Fibre based packaging refers to ‘a thread or flament from which a vegetable tssue,
mineral substance or textle is formed.’ In McDonalds, this would include paper or cardboard
packaging, however, not plastcs such as straws or cup lids.
